چکیده

This paper presents a semi-automatic methodology for fire scars mapping from a long time series of remote sensing data. Approximately, a hundred MSS images from diFerent Landsat satellites were employed over an area of 32 100 km in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. The analysed period was from 1975 to 1993. Results are a map series of fire history and frequencies. Omission errors are 23% for burned areas greater than 200 ha while commission errors are 8% for areas greater than 50 ha. Subsequent work based on the resultant fire scars will also help in describing fire regime and in monitoring post-fire regeneration dynamics.

Introducing the improved Forest Canopy density (FCD) model for frequent assessment of Hyrcanian forest

Mapping of forest extent is a prerequisite to acquire quantitative and qualitative information about forests and to formulate management and conservation strategies. forest canopy density (FCD) model is one of the useful RS methods for forest mapping using satellite images. One of the most serious challenges in FCD model is the weakness in the calculation of canopy density in low density forest...

Phenology-Based Method for Mapping Tropical Evergreen Forests by Integrating of MODIS and Landsat Imagery

Updated extent, area, and spatial distribution of tropical evergreen forests from inventory data provides valuable knowledge for research of the carbon cycle, biodiversity, and ecosystem services in tropical regions. However, acquiring these data in mountainous regions requires labor-intensive, often cost-prohibitive field protocols. Here, we report about validated methods to rapidly identify t...

Monitoring of post-fire forest recovery under different restoration modes based on time series Landsat data

Forest fire is a common disturbance factor, especially in boreal forests. The detection of forest disturbance and monitoring of post-fire forest recovery are crucial to both ecological research and forest management. The Greater Hinggan Mountain area of China is rich in forest resources, but also has a high incidence of forest fires. After the most serious forest fire in the history of P. R. Ch...

An Object-Based Approach for Fire History Reconstruction by Using Three Generations of Landsat Sensors

In this study, the capability of geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) in the reconstruction of the recent fire history of a typical Mediterranean area was investigated. More specifically, a semi-automated GEOBIA procedure was developed and tested on archived and newly acquired Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS), Thematic Mapper (TM), and Operational Land Imager (OLI) images in order...

Semi-Automatic Detection of Storm-Felled Forest Areas in Western Norway’s Spruce Forests Using a Landsat Time Series and Change Detection

Within the widely investigated field of forest disturbance monitoring, the detection of forest storm damages with remote sensing techniques gained rather low attention in the last years. This work aims to fill this gap. The project of storm damage detection, focusing on spruce forests, was initiated by the Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute ‘Skog og Landskap’. The triggering event for thi...
